Michael Meek

For City Mayor

Rio Rancho, NM — Michael Meek, a longtime public servant and dedicated resident of Rio Rancho, has officially announced his candidacy for Mayor in the upcoming municipal election scheduled for March 2026.

Meek, who has called Rio Rancho home since 1994, brings over three decades of public service experience to the race. He is currently serving his second four-year term as Sandoval County Commissioner for District 3 and holds the position of Chair of the Commission. His leadership extends beyond county lines through active involvement with the New Mexico Counties agency, where he was elected to the Board of Directors for the County Insurance Authority.

“Rio Rancho is a city built on collaboration and resilience,” said Meek. “I look forward to serving the citizens of Rio Rancho in this exciting new capacity.”

Prior to his tenure with Sandoval County, Meek served the City of Rio Rancho for 25 years in the Fire & Rescue Department, retiring in 2018 as Chief. A graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program, Meek led initiatives that twice improved the city’s Insurance Service Organization (ISO) rating—resulting in reduced insurance costs for residents and businesses due to enhanced emergency response capabilities.

Throughout his career, Meek has demonstrated a strong commitment to interagency cooperation, working effectively with both public and private entities to advance community goals.

His candidacy promises a continued focus on safety, efficiency, and community-driven leadership for Rio Rancho’s future.
